If the phone/tablet doesn't have GPS, the app just uses the recorded homepoint so you still have accurate distance and direction information.If the tablet also has aGPS, it knows where it is and can take the downloaded drone position and plot the relationship between the tablet and the current position of the drone.
The smart controller works exactly the same way.The DJI smart controller works differently.
