The drone, if that is what you mean by quad, has a GPS on board which is used as part of the flight control control system. It sends it’s position back to the controller which in turn passes it to the connected tablet or phone. If the tablet also has aGPS, it knows where it is and can take the downloaded drone position and plot the relationship between the tablet and the current position of the drone. The controller only acts as a data downloader for the drone.
