I can attest that it "shot up." I had a similar experience while running my battery down while hovering in my garage. Stupid mistake on my part but I had thought I had seen a video indicating the MP would simply land without ascending to RTH height if I was above my home point. I was using wifi mode without controller and tapped the RTH icon. The MP immediately shot up, hit the ceiling and came crashing down. Gimbal destroyed, props broken, front sensor damaged... $375 repair (California shipped me a new one.)Why fly on anything but a full battery? As soon as firmware update was done that battery went straight to the recharger and a freshly charged one swaped in. I will learn however from your story. I didn't know it had no sensor for obstacles above.
I also doubt it "shot up". The elevation rate during RTH is not high. You probably could have canceled it right?
