FAKE BATTERIES WILL COST YOU YOUR DRONE !

No, while the registration requirement was temporarily rescinded, it was later reinstated under the re-authorization act. Anything over half a pound has to be registered. $5 fee for all your recreational drones, and a different fee structure and certification requirements if flying for $$$ or for "furtherance of a business".
For what it's worth, it's not a good idea to tune out when it comes to your drones and legislation. The likely hood of the registration requirement going away for good were slim to none, and the FAA is still figuring out how to roll out the new rules. So pay attention to what the FAA is doing along with proposed legislation in your state and make sure you know what your state is trying to do in regards to drone laws and make your voice heard as you see fit (with your representatives).

I just received a Mavic Pro 2 at Christmas and had to pay $24.99 for a three year recreational registration...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you visited the wrong website and you got ripped off. If you are a recreational flyer it costs $5 for 3 years. You should have gone to this website and selected the "Fly Model Aircraft under Section 336": FAADroneZone
Hopefully, whatever website you visited actually did register you properly with the FAA.

What should I have received once I paid?

Isn't the serial number tied into the DJI account used to activate the drone?

Either way seems that the owner should have known that they at least needed FAA registration, and it would have been a good idea to have their contact info on the drone somewhere. But people often pay little attention to things and sometimes jump in with little to no knowledge
Always attack a label to the inside battery compartment of your drone... phone #... also on the battery... the battery can fall off some models and are costly. It's the same old same old of cutting a spare key for that car or truck you may have just bought. Duh!

I did get an email from the FAA with my registration. So, it got registered, I ended up paying someone else to do what I could have done, which was simply filling out online forms.

Live and learn!

Yup. Hopefully you got some labels with your registration # to put on your drone out of the deal.
