I don't use a sim card....I have a phone just for the MM. I had to register on wifi for the app and once that was downloaded I've set the phone to Airplane mode permanently.

You can fly whithout sim card, i usually fly with my phone in airplane mode. Once i had to deal with a text message to confirm an unlock area (in Italy), so take care when you go to a new area if it require some unlocking!
