Any Problems that i might have in flying over water with my mavic pro platinum. I have heard some horror stories.

Make sure you have sufficient battery power to make it back to the home point. If your Mavic auto lands over water, you likely won't be able to retrieve it. Other than that, it's just as safe as flying over land.

I find flying over water to be quite boring since the scenery does not change. When I do I don't wander too far from shore. I would also not fly over water with an untested craft or batteries (r.e. new). As for problems:
  • Downward sensors may be inaccurate over water. Low-level flights may lead to crash due to fluctuations in perceived height.
  • OA may detect false positives from reflected sunlight causing it to stop. If communication is lost it may just hover until forced to land in the water.
  • Water damage can cause a whole list of problems that may not appear until later.
  • If it cannot be recovered then you will be unable to use Refresh to replace it.
But on the positive side, you cannot beat signal clarity over water. Just make sure you have plenty of battery to get back. Pay attention to winds aloft so you do not have to fight a head wind on the return. If you are trying a long distance flight, fly parallel to the shore so you can land if forced to.

My friend lost his Mavic over a river. Why?

Parallel to shore is a good idea. However you might still get landscape to interfere with signal.

Unless you are in one of the few modes that use the downward sensors for visual positioning, the drone uses a barometer for altitude and GPS for the rest, so you don't need to worry about the sensors at all.

I've flown over water dozens of times, sometimes as low as only a couple feet above. Both moving water (river/waterfall) and still water - zero issues and I never turn the sensors off.

Outside a few specific circumstances, it is the same as flying over land.

There are lots of possible causes and all could just as easily have happened on land.
But no-one can say without some details or seeing the recorded flight data.

At least for the M2, and I doubt the MPP would be different, VPS is always on until you turn it off or exceed it's range. GPS is not as accurate, so it will use VPS if it can.

Missing my drone ...(in the shop) soryy just had to add
Never fly with less then 20% battery.!
............... and don't fly less then 30 ft on still water............cR

IF you fly over water which I do most all of the time, and you have care refresh, you may want to make one of these like I did. I lost one Mav over water, my fault. Never had any sensor issues and have done a lot of low flying and hovering. If you interested on how to make this let me know. Bolton

Possibly the sensors will not operate as intended.
Battery, need I say more!
GPS may become scrambled by the H2O, shouldn't, but possible.
Winds may become stronger, be aware of good tail wind going out, may mean head wind coming back
Have a Plan B in mind before flight, i.e., possible alternate landing sites where you may be able to recover drone.
Have fun and let's see the video.

I pretty much ONLY can fly over water if I want to fly any sort of distance at all... I always try to stay above 100ft and never fly directly into the sun.

Yes, you do!!! In the one photo, is that a very dark shadow or was that a burn area? I am sorry, but it does look like a burn area to me. Where is it, I'd like to google the general area.

Interesting... I see that at the top of the photo with the house... Hmmm... Sun sets in the west, right? Lol. That's 100% southwest of where I sit.... I dunno.. I must have flown it away and at a different direction... I had to do a 180 to come home.. Maybe I did? But I definitely DO NOT want to....
Gutwrenching photo of my ignorance.
