I guess the "free" period is over. All I see on the "Downloads" page for "Essentials" is "Free Trial" with the message " The trial never expires, but adds a 'Photomatix' watermark to images it produces. "

I think you are on the wrong page. Use the link posted by Northwood Mediaworks above and you will go to the correct one ('stay positive' page). Offer is still open.

I did go to the link from the OP. I was expecting the free offer to be at top of the page, instead of the very bottom, and went directly to the downloads page. Thanks for letting me know the offer was still open which prompted me to look at the ENTIRE page this time around.

Cool! Obviously, they are hoping the free Essentials offer leads to paid sales of the Pro version at full price. Since the Essentials wasn't paid for, no $39 credit applies to the upgrade purchase of the Pro version, like it would if you had actually paid for it. Good marketing strategy, if the conversion rate to Pro is relatively high.
