GPS mapping

I have a Mavic air and a Mavic two pro. I’ve been using a mini iPad 4 as my display. I see here in the forum about the iPad with WiFi only and having to use your iPhone to download a map of the area you are going to fly in. Can someone explain this to me please? Is It to be done every time I fly in a new area? Lastly, how do you do this; download maps from cell phone then to tablet ? Thanks for any help I can get.

If you are in a place with cell service you just hotspot your iPad and you will have live map display.
Downloading a map is for a cell dead zone
