Astonishing Pictures , Everyone one of them shows a part of Greece that is magical. I kept looking for a burger king and a Front lawn, seems that is not in favor. Its like Disney world for grown ups .

Thanks! I added locations.
Most of them prohibit drone flights don't they?

Either you can't fly over towns or people or many of the islands have airports and helicopter operations?

I always asked for a permission and they allowed it, sometimes I had to call the airport tower.

Hmm, you got permission from the local airports?

Their map seems to be all CTR and other restricted airspace.

But maybe police and other authorities on the islands don't care, as long as you don't interfere with planes and helicopters.

Firstly, I got the permissions directly from HCAA and then in Santorini and Corfu Old Town I had to call the airport towers. Never had any problems or declined flights.

Great to hear, may think about visiting again.

How about on Crete?

Athens, I'm guessing highly unlikely but maybe nearby areas like Sounion could be possible, as long as you stay away from the temple ruins.

Crete is easy to fly, Greeks are not strict with drones. Go visit and don't stress yourself out with overthinking. HCAA can always help you with flight requests.

I don't know if the OP is still around but I'm actually going to Greece in two weeks.

So I've been looking at places to fly, including looking at this thread, as well as Google Maps and Drone Aware GR.

A couple more questions if you're still here?

1. Did you only request permissions for areas which have some restrictions, that is they're YELLOW on the Drone Aware GR map?

On Corfu, the Corfu Town and some of the western coastal areas such as Palaiokastritsa show up as yellow.

But some of the northern coast, such as Cape Drastis, aren't shaded in the map, so I believe you don't have to get permission from the HCAA for those areas?

2. Where did you take off and land when you flew over the Old Fortress in Corfu Town? The Fortress requires admission, which is not a big deal but probably they wouldn't want you to take off and land from their premises?

First of all, just follow the instructions on their official website — I did that for every location I flew at in Greece. The process was very easy and straightforward, and they replied really quickly, so no worries there.

From what I remember, around the Old Town of Corfu I had to communicate with the airport control tower, but it was simple. I took off from the square in front of the fortress, but outside of its premises — there’s a park there, if I recall correctly.

Basically, you just need to use their website, check the area you want to fly in, ask them, and send them your flight plan. I didn’t have any issues, and as far as I know, the process is still the same today. They permitted me to fly everywhere I wanted, also in Santorini, Rhodes and Crete.

I requested a flight around the Old Fortress and they told me it's rejected and requires written permission from the "Correctional Facility." I'm not sure if they're referring to something on the Old Fortress premises.

I made a polygon taking off from just across the southern part of the moat leading to the castle to fly out over the water, go around to the end and then fly to some parts north of the peninsula north of the Old Fortress. Then fly back across the land back to the starting point:

I tried to make a path just flying over the water, around the peninsula and returning back to the launch point, staying only over the water. But that polygon which looked like a long letter C generated 12 GPS coordinates and the PDF form that they use only has room for 8 pairs of coordinates.

There are one or two drone 360 panos in Google Maps Street View including one directly over the Fortress.

I've sent requests for other parts of Corfu (western coast) and two spots in Santorini to HCAA. Now they forwarded to HASP.

Oh wow, that's so complicated. Maybe they made the rules stricter, but I wasn't that specific in submitting the exact location for the Fortress in 2021. See my map I sent them, and they allowed me to fly without any problems in the city around.

Interesting, that circle covers so much more footprint.

I just figured it was best to minimize land areas where there could be people since they tightened up the rules about flying over people from the start of 2024.

But also thought of staying close to that peninsula, figuring that planes taking off and landing at the airport would in general not get too close and low to the peninsula.

Sure, try it, but I don't think Greek people would care at all, enjoy the flight and share your results after!
