Basic question - how do you either ascend or descend whilst rotating - yaw- the Mavic to get those shots ? Same stick is used - so any help would be appreciated

Yes, practice, and be careful not to shut down your mavic with sticks in bottom corners!

Wouldn't it just be push the stick 45 degrees to the desired direction ( up and clockwise etc)?

Depends on speed of ascending/descending and yaw rotation you want to achieve

The sticks go in all directions so you can incrementally add yaw while going up and down.

By Yaw I assume you just wish to rotate the Mavic around its camera axis while ascending or descending to get a spinning effect which you have figured out . You can also Fly in POI mode and select the Point Of Interest you wish the camera to remain focused on while it circles around it . After setting an initial radius , height and speed to start you can also manually adjust the radius , height and speed while it is circling the POI to get a spinning , funnel effect .
