Hello from Iceland

Well, thats an interesting idea AMann. The situation however is that on the Reykjanes peninsula where currently every couple of months or so an eruption takes place, we are waiting on the next one that is probably going to take place this year. The eruptions are.. fissure eruptions though, so it will crack open the earth and erupt lava in most likely some kilometers fissure. There is a zone where it is going to happen but that zone is.. pretty big for 1 drone flight. I guess I could fly 120 meters high and use my wide angle lens to capture the area but when I do that, the volcanic eruption will probably look pretty small.
I hope I can be there on the 1st day of the next eruption however the government tends to close all roads close to the eruption on the 1st day and then see if it is safe for people to use the roads.
Anyway, I do.. have something that looks like what you describe. The photo's aren't taken with a drone but you can see the difference. The 1st picture of a waterfall is taken on a regular summer day, water is very clear and blue. The next picture though is as you can see the same waterfall but this time when there was a glacial outburst.



That makes the water and power level quiet different. It was all good fun watching that happen though and as far as I know, no damage to properties from the water levels.

That is an impressive change in the water level. Were you there at the start of it, and how long was it draining the glacial lake? I’ve seen a very small version of a glacial outburst in the state of Washington here in the US- it drained out of an ice cave. Pretty interesting what water can do! I’m familiar with rift zones and what they can do, but only in geomorphology textbooks at school. Have always wanted to visit Iceland to see that in person, it has been on my bucket list for a very long time!

I’ve seen a very small version of a glacial outburst in the state of Washington here in the US- it drained out of an ice cave. Pretty interesting what water can do! They publish those things on Station forecasts - whole country | Icelandic Meteorological office as soon as it happens. The high water level continued.. for about a week or so, here is one picture after one week:


Good reference point is here the stone "bridge" that no one can use. Water flows under that after 1 week while during the 1st day of the glacial outburst you can see the water pushing and even flooding over it. The small stone "bridge" is pretty strong, I thought it could collapse and I was hoping I would be there when it happens. But that didn't happen.

On the topic of waterfalls, yeah I can say how little is necessary to create a waterfall of proportions like the Bjarnarfoss in Snaefellsness. I went there yesterday and not to my surprise, now that I have a drone I noticed just a small stream feeding the waterfall:

Here is a picture of this waterfall, or foss in Icelandic that is being fed by that small stream.

I like that use of the slow shutter speed in that lower image, it’s a very nice looking waterfall with steps. Thanks for sharing it.
