Houston TX Mavic Pilots

I'm in Pearland to looking for scenic places to fly. Only thing I can think of is galveston.

Correy Miller

Pretty much all of Galveston proper is under restricted airspace. One has to go further south than Jamaica Beach.

In the Houston area until February 7 with my Mavic Pro. Any great spots that give a view of the city??

I think Jamica Beach and Galveston Island State Park are ok according to the FAA's B4UFLY app. They are more than 5 miles from Sholes Field, and the pink shaded area is just an alert area for pilots. I don't believe drones are restricted from flying in alert areas.

For what it's worth...I'm in Sugar Land (south west of Houston). I think I saw a few others on here from the Houston area. They're probably not on here often or just want to lay low under the radar for some reason. o_O

I contacted another person here who's also in Sugar Land but he never replied. I guess he thinks I'm a serial killer or something. Little does he know I'm passionate about family, flying and photography. :) Or maybe he crashed his Mavic already. :eek:
I ma in sugarland also and just got my mavic, do you know of any legal places to fly in sugarland?

Most, if not, all of the flying areas in Sugar Land that I like are withing 5 miles of Sugar Land Regional Airport. I always notify them. Let me know when you're planning on flying.

My head hurts after trying to read that TFR. Hope Trump fires the gov employee that wrote that. Can anyone translate? I'm in Cypress.

Here's my interpretation of one of the 2 Houston TFR's coming up on Super Bowl Sunday:
TFR, NOTAM : 7/7674

FLIGHT OPERATIONS ARE PROHIBITED WI AN AREA DEFINED AS 30NM RADIUS OF 294105N0952439W == Flight Operations Prohibited within a 30 nautical radius of 29°41'05"N, 095°24'39"W (Reliant Stadium).
SFC-17999FT MSL == Surface to 17,999 ft mean seal level
EFFECTIVE 1702052200 UTC (1600 LOCAL 02/05/17) UNTIL 1702060559 UTC (2359 LOCAL 02/05/17) == In effect from 4pm until 11:59pm on 2/5/17 Houston time.

WI AN AREA DEFINED AS 10NM RADIUS OF 294105N0952439W == Within a 10 nautical radius of Reliant Stadium
SFC-17999FT MSL == Surface to 17,999 ft mean seal level
EFFECTIVE 1702052200 UTC (1600 LOCAL 02/05/17) UNTIL 1702060559 UTC (2359 LOCAL 02/05/17) == In effect from 4pm until 11:59pm on 2/5/17 Houston time.

Then it says that all aircraft operations within the 10 nm radius, the inner ring, "ARE PROHIBITED EXCEPT FOR: APPROVED LAW ENFORCEMENT, MILITARY AIRCRAFT, APPROVED AIR AMBULANCE FLIGHTS, AND REGULARLY SCHEDULED COMMERCIAL PASSENGER AND ALL-CARGO CARRIERS"

For the area between the 10 nm and 30 nm radii, between the inner & outer rings, only arriving & departing aircraft are permitted providing they meet a bunch of requirements.
"FOR OPERATIONS WI THE AIRSPACE BETWEEN THE 10NM RADIUS AND 30NM RADIUS AREA(S) LISTED ABOVE, KNOWN AS THE OUTER RING(S): ALL AIRCRAFT OPERATING WI THE OUTER RING(S) LISTED ABOVE ARE LIMITED TO AIRCRAFT ARRIVING OR DEPARTING LOCAL AIRFIELDS",….

Then it goes on to says no UAVs are allowed anywhere in this TFR.
"THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED WI THIS TFR: UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS (UAS), MODEL AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS, MODEL ROCKETRY, FLIGHT TRAINING, PRACTICE INSTRUMENT APPROACHES, AEROBATIC FLIGHT, GLIDER OPERATIONS, SEAPLANE OPERATIONS, PARACHUTE OPERATIONS, ULTRALIGHT, HANG GLIDING, BALLOON OPERATIONS, AGRICULTURE/CROP DUSTING, ANIMAL POPULATION CONTROL FLIGHT OPERATIONS, BANNER TOWING OPERATIONS, SIGHTSEEING OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHTS, AND UTILITY 1702052200-1702060559 END PART"

So it only applies on game day....then I'm good.
