I was completely unaware there was an impending ban on DJI drones and that DJI is limiting support

I just found out 15 minutes ago DJI isn't allowing new activations along with the government trying to ban these.

I bought a used DJI Mavic 2 Pro on ebay last week which arrived today. I bought it off ebay for $799 + tax (Total of $840).

I also ordered two batteries, a car charger and 4 pairs of new propellers for it.

How screwed am I? Can I fly this drone?

Thank you,

You can fly it and likely there will be no ban on DJI drones already purchased.DJI is not currently servicing or selling drones the USA.People are still buying new drones through several retailers in the USA who likely get them from a foreign country.Ebay has many vendors selling Mavics from South Korea+a few from Japan. It's a fine drone.Good luck with it.

Ok, I saw this article and was wondering.

This part specifically has me worried.

But if you’re considering a second-hand DJI drone, be careful: DJI introduced a strict new policy on June 19, 2025 that only allows account unbinding, rebinding, or binding requests from the current bound account holder.

This means you’ll need the original owner’s help to transfer ownership and activate the drone under your own DJI account. If the seller can’t or won’t help, you may end up with a drone you can’t fly or update.

When buying used, stick to reputable sources—established drone shops, certified refurbishers, or trusted peer-to-peer platforms with buyer protection. Always confirm the drone can be unbound and rebound to your account before you pay.

DJI has said it will continue supporting existing drones for now, but it’s unclear how long that support will last, especially if a federal ban goes into effect. If the NDAA review isn’t completed by December 23, 2025, and DJI is added to the FCC Covered List, future software updates, warranty service, and parts availability could all be at risk.

Bottom line: DJI drones are still legal to own and fly in the U.S., but it’s a risky time to buy. If you find a used model and can confirm you’ll be able to activate and support it, it might be worth it—just know you’re buying into a lot of uncertainty.

As other's have said, you should be fine. Just check to make sure the drone is unbound (meaning it's not currently registered as belonging to someone else). You can do this by powering everything up and then tapping the profile icon along the bottom of the screen. If it's bound, you'll see the owner's info displayed. If there is no owner info, you should be able to enter your DJI account info (or create an account) and then it will be your drone :)

The Mavic 2 pro is eight years old and not supported by DJI anyway.

Neither of those is true and neither would make any difference to an 8 yr old second hand drone anyway.

Not at all, except for overpaying for an old drone.

That's good to know except for the overpaying part. But the used market seems pretty competitive since they are in high demand.

Oh no. So I did a factory reset on the controller when it arrived about 4:45 pm. I have no idea if it was bound or not before I did the factory reset.

I got it to hover in the living room and then set it back down. I guess it's good to go!

The cat was not happy.

I've played with the settings and now I'm sticking it back on the charger for the night. I'm going to try a short flight tomorrow in the mountains.
