How to properly connect to Assistant 2?

I've installed the Assistant 2 software onto my Windows 8.1 laptop. I plugged the micro-usb into the Mavic, and laptop, then turned the Mavic on. But, Assistant 2 just sits there waiting for a connection. I've tried every usb port, tried turning the Mavic on first before plugging it into the laptop, and even tried all of the above with the controller. It just won't connect. I searched DJI to see if there was a separate driver, but found nothing. What am I missing here?

Read the suggested thread. Already tried another usb cable. Moving the project over to my desktop next...

On desktop, installed Assistant 2, twice - allowed the program to pass through my firewall, tried two different USB cables, and smacked myself in the head with a mallet. Only the last item yielded any results. Hmmmmmmm.
