My advice, having had five stores, don't try to invent the wheel. Spend 6 months or a year working for a successful operation (one that is making money) and getting referrals and then take this information, and do your own. When leaving your employer, give him a long time notice and stay friends. Don't burn bridges in the business you want to go into. Also, marketing is the key too develop the business. Some marketing gives you a good return, other marketing is a waste of money.

The obstacle I came up against was the customer asking "do you work for a roofing company to fix whatever you find?". When I said "no", they were no longer interested.
