It’s not great but it might be ok. Turn off “cache during video shooting” and you’d probably be ok

Considering DJI doesn't list it as a compatible device I'm thinking that would be the case.

Can I assume that the controller itself will provide the GPS for return home in case of any problems?
I'm confident about being able to handle the drone by sight alone.

Controller has no GPS. Does your 5c have good batteries still? Also is there enough memory for all the Apple IOS updates? I gave mine to my kid as an emergency 911 phone and camera as it only had a few MB’s left.

Batteries are very good. Memory maybe, I'd have to transfer some things. Just not excited about spending a lot on a new phone as I only use this one to call my wife from work or if the car would break down. This really is the one thing holding me back from purchasing a new drone. I may have to pay the piper to play the game.

Well try it out! It was a great phone when it came out, but my sad little 8gb model was quickly outdated due to the combination of many IOS upgrades it needed, and my love for photo and mapping apps. I now use a refurbished 6s+ iPhone for my controller.

How about an 8” Amazon Kindle Fire? Although also not on the approved list of devices it works. You’ll need to put in a bit of an effort to get Google services installed but it might be worth it considering the price of the device

I think I used the process outlined here. Once you get the Google play store up and running you're good to go.

To be absolutely upfront about it I've only made maybe a dozen flights using the Fire so it really is a case of YMMV. At the moment I'm using a slightly battered iPad mini 4 because it has built in internet access and GPS.

Thanks!! There are a lot of droid apps I wanted but did not want to try to put them on my CS, so this will be a useful new update for our unused Kindle Fire, even if we don’t use it as a controller (doubtfully as for its lack of GPS anyway).

I do have a new i pad, but sorry to say it's wi-fi only, darn. So will the drone return home with a push of a button without being connected to an external phone or i pad?

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it you don’t need an internet connection for RTH as it is GPS.

Correct.
You only need internet for live maps, Uploading flight logs and updating firmware/ flySafe database.
