Would like to add iPad to my Mavic Pro. Ipad 4 very expensive, would the 2 or 3 be a good choice?
I understand I need one with cellular. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you

iPad 2 is no longer supported - not sure about the iPad 3. See the link below for the list of compatible Apple devices. IOS 10 or later is required so make sure that whatever you buy can run that version of IOS.

‎DJI GO 4

Scroll down to the "Information" section and expand Compatibility category to see all of the supported Apple devices.

Thanks for that, I was told I need cellular for gps (I’m new to all this) and yes I realise I need a mini.
thanks

No, you don't need cellular. The GPS receiver module is located on the drone. Cellular is handy in the field for downloading the latest maps but most people do that at home before going out to fly.

I first tried an iPad 2 cellular 64gb. Not a good experience. It just doesn't have the specs to properly run Go4.

It's strange how some people report performance-related issues with the older models such as the iPad Mini 2 but others are perfectly happy. The only thing I can attribute this to is the presence or otherwise of apps running in the background and/or the amount of RAM installed.

You make a god point. In my case with the iPad 2 I only had 24gb of the available 64gb of storage used and virtually nothing running in the background. My mistake was upgrading to IOS 10.3.4 ( the highest available for the iPad 2) after which it ran and still runs like molasses in February. The iPad 2 is 9 years old and its 32bit A5 processor really is outdated. The iPad 2 Mini, OTOH, is significantly faster with its 64bit A7 processor and retina display and probably can handle Go4 without issue.

Wait wait wait.... what drone are we talking about there? I have the m2p and thought i needed the mini 4 +cellular. if wifey only will allow all functionality I'm buying one....

Again, you don’t need cellular - it’s simply a nice to have if you want to download something like the latest maps and there is no WiFi connection available.

You would need cellular if, for example, you were flying the drone from a moving boat and wanted to use the Return to Home function. For the vast majority this is not something they are likely ever to do.

To clarify, it's not the cellular itself you need for Follow Me (not to be confused with Active Track) or update HP to RC position. It's that the iPad models without cellular capabilities (Wi-Fi only) don't have GPS hardware which the two features I mentioned need.

Active Track is camera based.

Thanks for clearing that up - I had forgotten that my drone can do Follow Me and that it relies on the GPS signal transmitted from the device (equipped with a cellular module) attached to the RC.

Minis 1 - 4 are not in production however good buys can be had on refurbished units. I have a Mini 3 refurbished and it works great for a devoted Go 4 App iPad. The 4 has the fastest processor of the four models. The 2 and 3 have the same A7 processor.
