Ipad mini usage

I'm new to this drone thing. Wanting to use an IPad mini 4 with cellular. Do I have to have my IPad connected to verizon cellular be connected to wifi or does it just use the GPS that is on the mini. Thanks

You only need to be connected to cellular (the Internet) if you want to use any features that require an Internet connection (like caching the map). Using any of the GPS related features does not require an Internet connection. And you don't need an Internet connection for general flying.
