Is Mavic's focus firmware driven, or more on the actual hardware?

So I'm curious, if DJI wanted to, can they set up the Mavic so that the focus is similar to the phantom series just by updating via firmware (ie everything in focus)? Or is this more camera driven and you have no choice but to pick a focus. I'm thinking it's the latter but just curious what you guys think.

I think the need to focus has come about due to the narrower field of view.
They could possibly have a firmware update have it default to infinity.
I'm not quite clear why it tends to focus on something a few feet away at take off anyway - it's almost as if during start up it self focuses on centre of screen?
In that case if you raised it up on a table for example it might start focused on something further away.
(don't have one yet to try)

Seems like they could make it auto focus or do some kind of infinity by default at least..
