I may just use an old car mat I have.

If you're going to be using the Return to Home (RTH) feature then it works best when there is a lot of colour contrast between the landing pad and the surrounding terrain. Bright blue and orange (like on the double-sided PGYTech) work really well.

There is a nice open field near the house with an unused baseball field. But the field has dirt. I don't want dirt on my new drone.

You are thinking correctly that it is best to try and minimize the amount of dirt that blows up into the inner workings of your drone. These foldable landing pads are great. I I have learned to hand catch my drone now and I do this because it saves time and keeps from having to land on the ground and possibly blow up dust. there is some danger in doing this, so I don't come out and push other people to do it but I am very happy with the practice. I am flying a mavic air which is a little smaller and easier to catch then some others might be.

That's a great idea. The prop wash is pretty strong and will move a piece of cardboard and such, but car mats would be perfect!
