Dear all, we spent a few days on the beautiful „Green“ island Corfu in Greece - here my impressions.

The lovely island is about 60*30 km and all interessting places can be easily reach with a car.
The capital city called Kerkyra is a beautiful place full of historic places, nice shops and restaurants - and cats :)

Lean back and enjoy, feedback welcome.

Ciao Rob

Hi, did you apply for permits to fly with the HCAA?

I heard there are flight restrictions in some of the most popular places. NFZ for the capital Corfu town since it's so close to the airport.

Possibly restrictions near the Paleokastritsa area.

Yes, Corfu Town is near to airport and for this reason I made a request to fly - you have to supply the coordinates from the flight area, the max height and the date of flight.
Before flying you have to get permission by telephon call.

The Greece administrations are very cooperatively and the hole procedere lasts only a few days.

You have to call when flying near the airport but for other parts of the island, particularly the west and northern coastal areas which are further away from the airport, did HCAA give you written approvals?

The very north at Cape Drastis is a free area, about the area at the west coastal I am not sure if you need permit.
I guess if you get near the airport permit, then should other not so sensitive areas also be possible.

Hi, I'm going to visit Greece, including Corfu, in a couple of weeks.

When you say Cape Drastis is a free area, you mean that in the Drone Aware GR map, it's not shaded in yellow, so there aren't any restrictions?

You didn't request permission for these clear areas on their drone map, only for the Yellow areas?

Yes, for clear areas you don’t need permission.
Last time I made a request for free areas and the answer was - „For free areas is no permission needed“.

Only permission I needed was for Kerkyra Town because the airport was to near but it was possible to fly there.

Have fun in Greece and show us some good places 😀

They rejected my submission for the area around the Old Fortress. They said I would need written permission from the "Correctional Facility." Not sure what that is referring to, maybe there's a prison around there somewhere.

I looked at taking off from right across the southwestern tip of the Fortress, across the moat. The polygon for my flight path went along the water, all the way out to the eastern tip and go north and then back westwards around the peninsula and then back to the home point.

Maybe cutting back across the land would involve flying over some prison or "Correctional Facility."

But I also submitted for Palaiokastritsa on the western coast and a couple of places on Santorini. They haven't given the final answer on those but they -- I emailed the HCAA -- forwarded it to the HASP.

Well, I made the polygon like that and got the answer in post #5.

The maximum flight altitude that I asked was 50 meter, what was your hight in the request?

I also found a prison im kerkyra, maybe you could exclude that in your polygon - good luck.

I think I had up to 120 meters.

This is what the HASP said::

TO Corfu Control Tower

The “Corfu Old Fortress” activity is not approved. A written consent from the management of the Correctional Facility involved is required.

For the rest of requests, I am forwarding you a request for permission/cooperation/coordination of a professional operator for the use of airspace according to the following information and map.

From the perspective of D4, we give initial approval within the framework of our competence. In case of final approval by Corfu Airport Authority, a specific time period will be determined.

Please provide your approval/coordination for the implementation of the activity in accordance with the procedure followed, if required:

 the operator to call within a reasonable time before the activity for consultation/receiving permission before the start of the flight,

 the operator to call before the start of the flight,

 to remain on hold on his GREEK SIM CARD mobile phone during it and

 to inform Corfu Airport Authority after its end on the phone: 26610 89824.

And the HCAA gave me an email address for the "Correctional Facility." It has a sofron.gov.gr address.

So it seems to be allowing the flight if I contact this email and also call the airport control tower. But they want me to have a Greek phone number that I could be reached at?

Well, a little bit confusing, when you call the tower your number will be displayed there, so they can call back.

Another tipp, before you fly check on Flight Radar App if any traffic is coming, so you can choose a good time to fly.

Ciao Rob
