With my first DJI quad, an F450 Flamewheel with the NAZA controller, it was very important to be on as level a surface as possible before turning on the sytem for the initial self calibration of gyros and sensors.
I don't recall seeing anything like this older NAZA instruction with regard to the Mavic.
I guess old habits die hard and I still try to find the most level piece of ground for my take offs. maybe this is no longer a necessity.
??

It's not as important for flight stability reasons, you can easily take off from your hand for example.
However the props and camera are very close to the ground so a smooth level spot is highly desireable

How about for gimble startup?

I took off from a slanted beach yesterday and the entire flight had a crooked horizon. Wasn't sure if this was a fluke or if the gimble leveled itself to a slight tilt from takeoff?

On the next battery, the horizon appeared level. I rotated the Mavic 90 degrees so it was more level.

bump!

Can anyone answer the question above? Search didn't turn up an answer, but I recall seeing this discussed here in the past.

Does the gimbal auto-level at startup based on launch position? (does it assume it starts on a level surface)

You don't need to take off from level ground, IMU and gimbal calibrations are not made at launch. They are only done through a manual setting.

Thanks for the reply, @tcope .

I must have experienced a fluke this weekend then...
I took off and noticed the camera was not moving at all. So I immediately landed. Checked it over, didn't see anything wrong.
Relaunched (from tilted beach, sideways) and my horizon was a few degrees off the entire flight. I flew it that way for the entire battery.
Finally, launched with a new battery and everything seemed normal, but I also rotated the drone prior to liftoff. Which is what made me think maybe it did something weird during startup calibration.

I guess something just wasn't right, or I had some debris in the gimbal or something.
