Correction:
The problem was not the distance away, it was that the drone stopped flying and fell from the sky.
How far away it was flown was not a contributing factor.
Clearly you miss the point of my comment entirely. I was trying to be subtle but I guess it failed. Let me put it in more straightforward language:
Fly VLOS and you won't encounter anywhere near the issues you are complaining about. Plus it has the benefit of being a legal flight.

“Flying a little over 5000 feet away” - there’s your problem.

That's all very well but the point remains that the distance he had flown played no part in the incident.
Flying a little over 5000 feet away was not the problem.
It could have happened just 10 metres away.

At 10 metres away he would have had the drone in hand to discover what had happened and be able to send it to DJI for replacement. Flying to 5000 ft and losing the drone, he's out of luck. Plus, how on earth could one know whether a drone that's 5000 ft away didn't hit someone or damage property when it failed. There are perfectly good reasons for following the regulations that this kind of flight behaviour caused to be implemented in the first place.
Plus I simply don't see how advising flying legally counts as "virtue signaling" any more than "don't steal" would be. There really are some very strange attitudes here.

That's all very well ... but you said that flying that far was his problem and it wasn't.
The distance he flew was completely irrelevant to the incident.

There really is no point in continuing this, I don't think.

If we are flying vlos, then we would be limited to... 500? 750 ft??? Thats how far we can see before it disappears into thin air!

If im flying drone, my eyes are on the sceen all the time! By looking at screen, i know where the general area of my drone is...

Legally speaking in most jurisdictions you are meant to fly VLOS at all times so yes, if can only see the drone at 500’ then that’s all you should fly to.

Whether people stick to this or not is of course a different matter :)

All reasonable comments, but despite earlier requests things are way off topic and it’s all been said.
