M2 battery, 1st LED flashing continuously, even when not in the drone, what does it mean?

As with the title, a mate got one with a 2nd hand drone so its history is unknown.

I would say any DJI battery pack with that characteristic is "dead" (lost cause).

Have you tried to charge it?... and if you do, don't leave it unattended... it could certainly be a bad battery. Also, have you tried to turn it on?

He has tried charging it but it continued to flash 1 LED, he was reluctant to leave it connected for more than a minute in case it messed up the charger.
Attempts to switch it on did not work. He said it flashed all four LEDs simultaneouslty and did not give the sequential display of a normal battery.
He is going to drop it off here as I wouldn't mind opening one up just to see what is inside. I might then stick a voltmeter across the contacts/cells.

It won't damage the charger, you should just leave it plugged.
