Mavic 2 vs. Waypoints - Am I missing something?

The new waypoints really looks great, however, you cannot plan your waypoints unless you have connected to the drone first. Except, I have found that if you connect the DJI GO4 APP to your drone and then disconnect it, you can still continue to plan or add waypoint routes. If you completely close the APP then you have to reconnect the APP to the drone to continue any programing. So is there anyway to program your drone with waypoints without having to start up the drone and connecting it to DJI GO4 first? Great new feature but it is like having to start up your car before you can program a Garmin with a route.
