Mavic 2 zoom new gimbal registration

Greetings from Birmingham, Alabama

If installed correctly, I would think that it would work automatically with the smart controller

DJI does not mean to register it....this is what happens when you deal with DJI's third party service techs....You must serialize the gimbal in order for the Drone to let it operate?
WAIT CORRECTION
First have you calibrated your new gimbal using PYTHON.

Swapping cameras on a Mavic 2 series aircraft is just that. I’ve not seen what you describe.
Where did the swapped camera come from?

An old post states that if you swap the whole assembly to include the IMU it is a simple swap. If you don't swap the IMU then you must calibrate the gimbal. Calibrating it is not a long or hard process.

Bought it from Runchicken via Amazon
At the price you paid, it should be the complete camera assembly, which is fully swappable with no additional calibration, updates, or anything. Plug and play swappable. Just not something you want to do in the field.

You MUST calibrate the new gimbal using python or it will not work correctly. Your gimbal must know where "0" is it won't until you do the python cal.

He has installed new gimbal and in this case calibration is required
I have swapped cameras on these aircraft over 40 times and NEVER needed to calibrate ANYTHING. Without specific information on what “new gimbal” the OP
“installed”, we are only guessing at what will resolve his issue.
