If you add lights to a Mavic mini and the total weight becomes 250 gm or more, are you required to register it?

Different laws in different places, but most seem use some form of "actual take off what", not "maximum" not "design". So yes it would change the legal status if some accessory took it over 250g

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I just sent a request to Transport Canada to see if you can register drones less than 250 grams. If so it might be worth doing for the $5.00 as it will give you some chance of retrieving a lost drone. I await their reply.

I would have replied earlier but didn't know what country you were needing regulations for. Now I realize you've got a Canadian Postal Code as your location.

The benefit of a mini in Canada is that it is below the small RPAS regulations (250g -22k) which in addition to the $5 registration, you are required to pass the Basic Operations or Advanced Operations certification tests depending on you use. As soon as you add any weight at all to the mini it'll bring you over the magic 250g number and you'll have to jump thru all those hoops.

I don't see how registering it will help in recovering a lost drone. Put your phone # on it.

Here's a link for more Transport Canada info for you to read HERE.

If someone finds your registered drone and contacts Transport Canada they have your contact information on file. This may result in you getting your drone back.

Mind you a sticker with your phone number on would also help retrieve a lost drone, as I suspect that most of the public would not know who to contact anyway.
