What would cause the battery to overheat while in flight ? If the battery overheats would I be able to use it in the future ?

I am not sure maybe a few months old, but i had just done a update on my mavic pro and was taken her for a test flight. I flew it around a few times and then something came up so I left her in a hover while I took care of something else for a couple minutes. I picked up my remote and started to fly around again. Then I saw on my ipad2 Battery overheating in red. So I brought her down right away.
