I bought the combo pack and have one standard battery and two plus batteries, I haven't been using the plus batteries because it's not registered and only fly with the standard one. Considering buying one more plus and registering the drone. Thoughts?

That sounds like an okay plan if you're looking for more flight time and don't mind registering.

I was going to buy two more standard batteries for a total of three, but then I'd only need to buy one plus to have three. I have no problem registering at all to be compliant with the plus.
None of this was an issue when I bought the drone, but things change. From what I gather it's either or, correct, otherwise it's just too much of a headache to deal with two different size batteries.
One more question, a rid module isn't required for this model right, because of software updates.

An external RID module would only be needed if using an aircraft firmware older than 01.00.0400.

An external RID module would only be needed if you do any of the following:
  • Use an aircraft firmware older than 01.00.0400 with a plus battery
  • Register your Mini 3 Pro with the FAA and use a standard battery
I think your second statement is incorrect. The Mini 3 Pro is RID compliant with either battery. The Mini 3 requires the larger battery to be RID compliant.
