Hi John,
this is a real masterpiece wow ??? I would even have watched more than the 5.30minutes! ? I discoverd some amazing "tricks" as the "groving tree", the dolly zooms, the dissolve from fall to winter with the snow. The colored shed and the the snow appears, fantastic! Black and white is perfect for such a movie!
Big compliments, you did a fantastic job!
???
cheers Paul
BTW, how did you do the growing tree?

Definitely not your first flight. And not your first edit!

I don't think I've ever seen a more professional video/editing than this one. I just can't figure out how you created the growing tree effect.

This is a nice piece of cinematography. Loved the mask reveal at the beginning. Final Cut Pro? B&W is rarely seen here on the forum, and yours looks perfect for my money. Great soundtrack & editing. Maybe slightly too long, but otherwise excellent. ???

Looks like you would create a cut out (at the bottom of the mask frame) mask of the sky with clouds, in the shape of the top of the tree, then drop it as an overlay on top of the tree clip. Then move it from bottom to top of frame as a slow reveal, this will allow the tree underneath to slowly be shown, as if raising a roller blind slowly to show what is behind it, if you get what I'm trying to describe. There were some nice upside down in the water shots of reflections too. Great music choice, scenes and editing, a pleasure to watch and I did not feel it was too long.

Hi Cymruflyer,
thanks for the explanations, and yes I understood what you mean ?? One day I will also try to do someting like this because it really looks so great!
cheers Paul

The growing tree is a large Maple tree at the end of my driveway. I first pointed my gimbal up towards the sky to the 30 degrees max. Then flew close enough to the tree to eliminate other trees in the surrounding area from the field of view. Then I started a video recording as I hovered. The last step was to fly directly upwards (slowly so a not to disturb the gimbal) and continue recording the sky without the tree in the field of view. I was shooting in 4K 3840 x 2160, Dlog-M.

In post production, I created two freeze frames from the video. First of the tree, then of the sky without the tree. Since there was not much wind, the image of the clouds in the sky was not much different from the clouds appearing behind the tree. Although there is a slight change in the angle of perspective of the sky between the two elevations of the drone, the effect is undetectable. So I end up with two still frames... one with the tree and the clouds behind it, and one of just the clouds without the tree. It would have worked just as well to just take a still shot rather than a video.

The last step was to place the two still shots on top of each other in the timeline (I'm using Final Cut Pro). The bottom image is of the sky, the top image is of the tree. For the image with the tree, I constructed a somewhat rounded draw mask around the tree, and moved the mask via key frames from the bottom to the top of the image. I also added a little fall off to the mask so that it's edge is not too sharp.

Here's my timeline with the two clips.

Here's what my draw mask looked like near the end of the clip... You can see it does not need to be closely detailed to the individual branches... just a general outline. I used a simple position transform to move the mask from the bottom of the image to the top with just two key frames.

Here's a reply with my method.

Thanks. Yes, there are moments that are too long. I think it's because I'm too engrossed into the project, and the desire to see the video reflect my experiences of being there in the woods. No video will ever reflect the actual beauty of the snow that I saw, or the amazing tree reflections off the water. But I tried.

Thanks. Your technical analysis is spot on!

Hi John,
thank you very much for the detailled explanations. The idea to do such a "trick" is really absolutely ingenious and the final result looks outstanding ??

merry Christmas to you and your family and stay safe and sound!?
cheers Pauk

I loved the "Growing Tree", and using a mask is how I suspected you had done it. Very well done.

My own thought, when I first saw it, was that it was like watching a window slowly defrost, though I have to agree, Growing Tree may be a more apt description.
