Need Atti Mode vs. Vision System refresher

Tried to practice flying in Atti mode, using the aluminum foil method. Had fewer than 6 satellites, so took off in "Opti" mode, which seemed to use the Vision system. Turned vision off, but still could not get the silly bird into Atti mode. I know it wasn't because I was still seeing substantial braking on direction reversal.
Is there something else to disable to get the thing into Atti mode?

I also would love to be able to get into ATTI mode at will and am amazed you can't. The only way I found was a firmware hack. I only glanced at the instructions and it seemed fairly straightforward but I am a new owner so am reluctant to do it until I know my Mavic better.
