That was my first thought as well and it seems highly irresponsible for a company not just to suggest it but to highly reward people for the task. It's only going to be viable for specialist companies that can automate the flight of drones and should not be attempted by a large group of people flying their own consumer drones.

Guys, it’s not lots of drones close together in the dark. You place the drones on the ground in the shape of the word and space them 10ft or so apart and everyone would just take off and fly straight up without going forward or backwards or anything. Just position hold and climb to altitude. We can even offset/stagger the altitudes so that some drones are higher and some drones are lower than the other ones nearby. However no one is flying anywhere but straight up and back down.

Yeap you could use a net where leds are glued forming the letters and lifting it up with 2 / 4 drones relatively safely

What do you guys think, if anyone has the people to pull this off somewhere else then I can coordinate with you and just have you send a video of it.

Plus, of course, there’s the issue that every drones would need to be flying on a different 2.4 or 5.8 channel...

You have underestimated the amount of drones needed, 5 to do the I and 12 to do the H and those are the two easiest.

Love the idea, but as others have mentioned harder to do than one would imagine. Simpler idea is to stretch a screen or netting flat overhead and lay glow sticks above, filming from underneath into the night sky.

I would never risk my drone in a challenge like that. You would have to completely trust each and every pilot. Night-time flying is for the birds.

Or small LED's on a very light net. 4 drones, one on each corner to lift it? Could get your picture from underneath.

I did manage to pull it off. I used 41 cheerson CX-10 drones that I used bbq skewers to make a frame to hold them together and then tethered them to the ground about 4ft up.
