New Computer

I am getting ready to by a new computer that I will just use for video / photo editing.......any suggestions as to what is best.......some say 16gb ram others 32gb....what about the processor........what are most of you guys and gals using........any suggestion would be appreciated.

Besides RAM and processor, also factor in graphics card. SSD drive as your working drive will go a long way.

Check software requirements, get the best hardware you can afford.

Also, will you be rendering in 1080 or 4K.... 4K takes LOTS of speed and power! Sorry, I do not know the specifics of what that takes.

My computer build starts Wednesday. I had no clue when I bought the drones that I'd spend more on a computer to do the pictures and video with than I did the drones! Shouldn't complain, I've been needing a new computer anyway.

I upgraded to a Dell XPS 15 with 16gb, I would have gone with 32gb if I could have afforded it.
16gb runs fine though, even processing 4k 60fps in premier

My love bought me a Dell Precision 3630 desktop for Christmas with the 1 TB drive and the Intel core i5 processor. Fast graphics card and lots of horsepower out of that 64-bit processor. This will be my first 64-bit machine, and my newest version of Movie Studio HD Platinum will ONLY run on 64 bits. I'm just now unboxing and setting it up, so will run some video processing benchmarks with it later today,

Check the requirements of the editing program you are using and buy better than the minimum requirements. It's best to buy the recommended requirements or better.

I run an IT company, and I'd endorse this spec' ... I'd only add that it's the graphics card that can make all the difference, so you can go for a middle of the road Intel core-i7 processor PC, but spend your money on the Graphics card! ... If anybody suggests that you can get equivalent graphics capability out of a laptop, just have a look at how big one of these serious Graphics cards are ... They are half the size of a laptop! You'll always get better graphics out of a PC box and a decent graphics card.
If you have the money - the only other thing I'd suggest is that you upgrade the PC to give it a solid state hard drive (SSD). That will significantly speed up load and operation of software. Personally, I use a 500GB SSD in my PC to run the Windows OS, and applications, and have a second 4 TB conventional [spinning platter] drive for file storage.

If anybody suggests that you can get equivalent graphics capability out of a laptop, just have a look at how big one of these serious Graphics cards are ... They are half the size of a laptop! You'll always get better graphics out of a PC box and a decent graphics card.

As of the Nvidia 10xx series, the laptop graphics cards offer the same performance as their desktop counterparts:

These are just a few preliminary benchmarks, but sure enough, Nvidia delivered on its promise. At the very least, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 performed similarly to its desktop counterpart

There's no mobile 20xx parts yet although their high price and lack of significant performance improvement over the 10xx series means they're not a popular choice for the desktops currently anyway.
