Now there are two (or three??) investigations going on with DJI drone use in the U.S. I sure do hope DJI passes the investigations but it seems like they're constantly fighting an uphill battle with our current administrations' tariffs and national security concerns. When will it end??

DJI has already completely retreated from the U.S. market. It's basically already over. Enjoy all your DJI existing equipment until it breaks or crashes, and have backups and spare parts, cannibalizing as necessary. Some stuff may be sourced internationally, but expect delays, customs holds, tariffs, and a likely return to sender when all goes sideways, and hope you can get your money back.

Such a shame... if it genuinely was all about 'evil empires' and transistorised terrorism: you might understand some of the reasoning... and (to a degree) accept sensible restrictions, but reading through the McCarthyist paranoia and frothy invective has taught me something I was genuinely ignorant of... and that is just how many different flavours of B.S. there are.

I myself have already slowed on purchasing DJI Drones simply because of the parts headache. I hoped that something could have been worked out BUT the Government wants to stick to its guns and so does DJI.
If this mess is ever settled it will only be after regulations on recreational pilots are so strict that the only Drone DJI will be able to sell here will be the Mini. Oh well more of my money will be going to GEPRC now!

As a community, are we prepared for the likely outcome that this audit will either confirm that DJI drones are a threat (essentially backing up the government claims) or ending up being "inconclusive" as in not able to make a final determination? We asked for the audit knowing there is a chance it could fail and it would be very difficult to challenge the results if it doesn't go our way. Personally I think it's the latter and this audit will not "clear" DJI of any wrongdoing but it will cleverly but convincingly box in DJI as an unknown or potential threat with definite repercussions to national security. A bunch of open ended conclusions, a lot of what-ifs, mysterious ramifications if left unchecked, etc. The government has stated their position, I'm not sure how a government audit is supposed to counter it at this point. It may not corroborate the claims but it won't squash them either.

And even if it did, even if the audit can't find a single issue, this will be a signal to the states that once again the federal government is derelict with their duties and it's up to the states to take action. First they won't enforce any of the rules. Second, the geofencing is allowed to be brought down. And finally, they refused to condemn DJI conclusively. I think you will then see a volley of legislation at the local level to fill in the void left by the federal government who had but one job.

DJI was over in the USA Months ago, even before new Administration. These investigations are formalities. DJI is not happening in US. I think a bigger part of this is to free the skies for the drone deliveries and such which companies are paying billions to the IS Govt for rights. As you can see there is no American Company to fill the DJI void and doesn't seem as if anyone is in a hurry to do so. That should speak volumes.

I think there is a huge market for an American drone company to make good prosumer drones. There were a few companies that just gave up when DJI flooded the market with good, cheap drones. Now that DJI may be out of the game, I hope they will come back. Those of us to make a living from drones need a solution ASAP. Maybe FreeFly can design a smaller model to fly only small cameras?

LOL.

There's a huge market for America to make good cell phones, washer dryers, televisions, refrigerators, cars, pharmaceuticals, clothing, shoes and hundreds if not thousands of other products. Yet here we sit.

Dream on...

I do agree there will be a good market for US made stuff that WORKS! That means it's important to roll out with an excellent product to begin with and that shouldn't be terrifically but at what price point? Time to stock up on parts just in case.

Facts ^^

Actually it could be good news. DJI has claimed multiple times they wanted to be able to prove their drones are secure.

You guys are commenting as if there will be a serious, unbiased review of the the facts. That is not what this is about at all. If it were about the facts of a possible security threat, or not, it would have been settled years ago. This is about hardball lobbying, and fear of tech that the politicians do not understand.

They (the politicians) have the lobbyists screaming in their ears and lining their pockets. Meanwhile they see what is happening with small drones in Ukraine and that gives them a perfect reason, in their view, to get rid of Chinese sourced drones.

  • They don't care about those of us that use drones for whatever reason.
  • They don't care that the US doesn't make most of this equipment. Nor the parts that go into them.
  • They don't care that they can't prove that data is being scraped.
  • They don't care that, just like anything else, guns, automobiles, airplanes, etc., that a bad actor can use US made drones as a weapon as well as a Chinese drone.
Yet, ironically, but again because of hard-ball lobbying, the same politicians are all for unrestricted development and deployment of AI. With such weak leadership, there is good reason to expect that the sky is falling.

I am sure the auditers will be paid off by the law makers to make sure they come up with something fabricated to sink DJI and Autel.Such a shame

But none of those products are being banned here. There are quite a few American drone companies. Let’s hope they see the opportunity to make some for the hole left by the DJI ban.

There is no way a phone made in China could be a security threat, right?

What US companies produce drones similar DJI's?
None, and therein lies the problem. DJI is leaps and bounds above any U.S. drone manufacturer, in terms of both technology and pricing. DJI has always set the standard for others to aspire to, which is why we love their products and the pricing.

Yup. It was just a matter of time. The conclusion was inevitable. With the fox now guarding the hen house, no chickens will survive.
