Some payload controllers use the landing light to control a drop. Turn on lights and it activates the solenoid. If you Google it you can find DIY circuits online to make it yourself for just a few dollars. This is pretty simple and does not require any surgery to the drone at all, as the light sensor is merely taped over the landing lights.
