Another beginner question -
Could i ask members what happens if someone rings you when you are flying is that part of the phone nothing to do with flying the drone so nothing to worry about?

For the most part, has nothing to do with you flying and drone and you should be able to safely ignore any incoming calls or text message. It is a suggestion that you put your phone into airplane mode and if necessary, turn on the wifi if you can and if you need it. However, the best solution is to use your phone for calls and text and use a separate smart controller to fly your drone.

One reason NOT to put your phone in Airplane Mode is so you can still be reachable in an emergency. Even if your ringing display takes over and completely covers DJI Fly, it will not affect control of the drone, which you can see (right? 😁) and fly just fine.

You don't have to answer the call, but it allows you to see who's calling, and if necessary come home, land, and call back if necessary.

In Airplane mode, you can be completely unreachable for hours. Which may, in fact, be the point 😁

Thanks for the answers, glad to know it cannot cause a problem i will leave it as it is and ignore calls texts until i have landed.

You can ignore the call or if you have enough battery life, let it hover and answer, or land the drone then answer. Personally, I never take calls while my drone is in the air. Nor do I use my phone as a monitoring device for my drone.

You could investigate using a 10" sim-free tablet as your flight screen. PGYTECH produce some cracking tablet supports that fit perfectly into the phone rebate in the controller. Best of both worlds that way: whopping big screen to observe the FPV and alter settings on-the-fly and your phone safely in your pocket.

That is a question that has gone through everyone's mind at some time. Fast forward with some experience... I do nothing, maybe cancel the call. The drone will not fall out of the sky or do something irrational (famous last words)

If you’re flying on a LAANC clearance you MUST be available at the phone number you used in the clearance while operating the aircraft. You cannot put that cellphone into airplane mode no matter if it’s in your pocket or attached to a controller. Being available at that number is a condition of that clearance.

DOH I missed the part about the supports I will look into that.
Can I ask if you have the same problem with brightness with the tablet wouldn't you still need a shade?

Probably, unless you have the bucks for a rather bulky and slightly heavy Tripeltek or something similar. Like others, I try to fly from the shade or from in my vehicle when the sun is a problem.

When I am forced to use a phone (like with the skydio or the smaller autel drones) then I have chosen the Triptek Mini phone with has excellent screen brightness and is way less expensive when you buy one on the secondary market.

I have a tablet it doesn't take a sim card can i use that with n problem?
Yup. It took me all of two weeks to get sick of squinting at the small phone screen (dodgy eyesight) - switched to using a standard 64 bit android tablet. No sim: no calls... no interruptions from social media notifications either.

Screen brightness (or wallet lightness) can be a problem in some conditions regardless of what you use. I've read similar complaints about the controllers with built in screens. On top of that: the brighter the screen - the more power it is burning through. I think the real problem is glare, not dimness... so I'll try to alter the angle of the screen to compensate.

The real benefit with an android tab is the fact you can load third party apps onto it.

Thanks Felix i have checked my tablet and the nits are far less than my phone so i wont gain any advantage by using it, i will try a screen shade and see how i get on with that.

Got a screen shade as part of my field kit for my mavics years ago... To be truthful, I've only used it once or twice and I ended up customizing it so that there was a flip-over 'lid' to cut even more light away from the screen. It did work, but it was a bit of a faff putting it on so I just altered my position (in relation to the sun) instead... or found a nice tree/wall/building to stand in the shade of.

I have seen polarising screen protectors advertised, pretty sure they would have a beneficial effect - if a polarizer works well on the drone camera: no reason why it wouldn't cut down on specular highlights on a tab/phone screen.
