Picking up sat image on maps

Even though I can see there that there should be a sat image on map in the small box on the right it will not show up on the enlarged map viewer. What gives, it's very distracting trying to see where I am without the cache.

Exactly...connect to WiFi/cellphone hotspot and zoom into the area before takeoff to load the cache with map data

I did try earlier with the wi fi on and it didn't take. After calb it suddenly worked.
