Hi all,
This is my first question after joining the group. Here goes!

As a new drone user, should I get Premiere Rush or Premiere Pro? I’d be very interested to hear your opinions as to which one is best for a beginner editing movies.
I’m already familiar with Photoshop to a certain standard. I’m far from professional.

Thank you
David.

Unless you're already paying for a Creative Cloud subscription, I would suggest DaVinci Resolve. I have been a professional Photoshop user since before it had layers (remember floating selections?) and I still prefer Da Vinci Resolve over Premiere Pro (which I have). It's a little bit of a learning curve for using nodes but it's an all-in-one software that combines Premiere Pro, Adobe Bridge, After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audition into one application. Plus there's a free version that you can perform most of what you need for video editing.Even if you decide to stick with Adobe, download the free version and give it a try.

David:

I am a long time Adobe user. All of my adult life (86 years) I have started with the first iteration of Photoshop and now, have been getting a deal from calling Adobe directly and asking for a discount. They offered me a great deal for a yearly rate paid monthly of something like $19.00 for the entire creative suite which includes all of the Adobe apps (over 36), I had a private instructor and took a community college course in Premiere. I understand the attraction of the free Da Vinci Resolve. But the phone support from Adobe swayed me to stay with Adobe. It is just a bit more effort to use the full Premiere program. I get nearly monthly upgrades of Photoshop and Lightroom as well as yearly upgrades of Premiere. I can call Adobe any time for expert support.

WOW! Lucky you. Great deal for sure. I have a long way to get to your wonderful age and I think adobe would not be as generous if I called them up lol. My current desktop is too old to run any of the new updates. I am a subscriber to creative cloud and I’m running all the software but not updated as the OS can’t be updated.
I have an iPad and as I speak I’m updating the OS. Hopefully I’ll be able to run both the Davinci and Premiere Pro. I’m a simple man so which ever software I can easily use will be the one I pick. I’ll let you all know my progress.
Thanks for your help.
🙏

DaVINCI Resolve Its the standard and its FREE.

Adobe has a steep learning curve , I would be more prone to got with Capcut .

Yes PhantomRain. Premier Pro does have a steep learning curve! However, once learned, it has huge capabilities. My main reason to keep paying instead of switching, frankly is, that at my age, I cannot go through another learning curve. But in addition, I can call Adobe (Chenai, India) and get a very smart tech to get me out of any trouble. They screen share with me, and fix any problems I have. Without this excellent Adobe support I would most certainly have to resort to Da Vinci.

Blackmagic is Taking over and if you can use the Adobe Software its not much of a curve to step into Resolve.
Adobe Products ARE excellent BUT as you grow it seems so does the "sticker price"
I have used Photoshop for quite some time and Using other Photo editors is pretty straight-forward because of it.
I see your point completely tho. Why fix what works fine for you!

I have/use Edius, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. There are many Youtube tutorials on each of these programs. After using the free tutorials I can now say in all honesty, that of all the editing software packages I have, DaVinci resolve runs rings around the rest. But, and this is a big but, you need a pretty powerful PC to run Resolve. The free version of Resolve will do just about anything that you need, the paid version (around $300) is amazing, one of payment and all the future updates are free. Davinci Resolve, in my opinion is way more powerful than Premiere and way cheaper. I am 80 and am progressing quickly in my knowledge of Resolve. It's not that hard.

I know that I am in the minority on the forum, the higher percentage of editors using Da Vinci Resolve. When I went from still images to video for timelapse and drone video, I was in a great quandary, since I was a whiz with Photoshop, and I needed Lightroom (Adobe too) to process my time apses with LR timelapse. So immediately, I was locked into Adobe with Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge. I tried other (Luminar, Topaz) but nothing compared to Adobe products for me. I really was hurting under the dollar amount Adobe was asking, so I called them, and talked myself in a deal with them. After getting a great rate for 3-4 years, they finally offered my an unbelievable deal of the entire Adobe Suite (47 apps) for $29. a month, a year paid in advance. This was instead of That actual amount of more than $700.00 a year. So now, I have renewed for a 2nd year, the same deal. Along with Photoshop with almost weekly improvements and AI generative abilities and making complex selections with AI masking tool, Lightroom, and Bridge. I got Premier with great tech support whenever I need it, and 44 other Adobe apps, including PDF. I am thankful I can easily afford this and do not want to learn a new Da Vinci with another learning curve.

I recently purchased Luminar Neo, loving it and a lot easier to learn than the Adobe products with the same or better results.

I HIGHLY suggest getting the free DaVinci resolve but get one additional thing too, it will be a game changer for you, read on.

I am a long time Photoshop user (Many, many years, long before layers) and I have Premier Pro. I was and still am, new to video editing and tried PRO first. However, since so many people were suggesting the FREE Da Vinci Resolve, I got that. I watched some tutorials, and it looked easier to use. I then discover the Black Magic Speed Editor for Da Vinci resolve.

I watched the tutorials from the manufacturer using that excellent tool, and I was amazed at how simple and quick everything became, when using the Speed Editor. You will be sooo pleased you did that, and they can be found pre-owned, for a good price on ebay.

In fact, every now and then, when Black Magic does a special sale for the paid version of DaVinci Resolve, they sometimes include the Speed Editor for free, with the package. Either way, just get the free version of DaVinci and get yourself the Speed Editor and you will thank me over and over. Just take a look at their website and watch a tutorial. You're welcome.

Quick question for all the DVR users: I am reading different reports about 10-bit color grading. It's definitely available in Studio but some folks are saying the free version doesn't have it, or at least it isn't fully supported. Which is true? I really want to get off the Adobe ecosystem but I can't function without color grading.

Go to the DaVinci website and watch a tutorial on color grading with the free version. I believe you will find there is a color grading feature on the free version, just not as robust as the paid version. I think in the free version it is only available in 8-Bit though.
