So, my drone hobby has a few key areas that interest me... One of the biggest admittedly is capturing sunsets and is a steadily growing personal hobby of mine.

Well the last 4 nights I have been skunked on what I would considered decent ones and where after the fact I questioned if it was worth my time waiting for hyperlapses to finish (I mean its a little boring since dji fly's itself taking them).

This got me thinking, how can one predict sunsets/sunrises and i did some googling.

What I came across was this article and this site.

I am wondering if anyone has looked at this before? As I take them I will start comparing and see if it matches up.. unfortunately it seems I wont be getting a good one tonight (In Houston, Texas)....

What do you think is a good way to predict sunsets that will be amazing?

Being that I live on the lake , its all about the clouds, if there our plenty , good chance something good is coming , but if its a clear sky , i dont bother going up.
Even if you do not get the Sun magic your looking for some clouds can provide for some nice footage also,

So im always looking for the 3 to 1 Ratio if you include the storms to increase my chances.

Luminary’s 4 has some great sunset skies it can create for you. While maybe “cheating” it allows the creation of a beautiful image at a spot where you can’t come back and wait for the real thing.

So Sean-

I am keenly interested in sunsets and sunrises. That is very apparent by my numerous posts of this this forum. Please tell me the exact procedures you are doing- e.g.: do you use intelligent flight mode hyperlapse in the video mode? Shoot in RAW? Saw RAW files and process separately from drone processing? Or do you use the PHOTO mode and times shots-= like 5 seconds for RAW. Do you hover or do you fly towards the sun?

I did not know about that website. Awesome.

But I likely won't use it because my routine pretty much has everything worked out.

Here ya go:
Use the "Windy" app (the one with a red icon) and select "Satellite" which gives you cloud cover. Now animate the frames.

What you are looking for is this... Clouds moving pretty much any direction except West (for the setting sun). That's step one.

Step outside and look at the sky. If you have a low cloud ceiling, look at the horizon. Does the cloud ceiling extend all the way to the horizon?

... I stopped typing a drew a flowchart... Uploading it now
