A few days ago, I was flying my drone, before the I had fully charged the drone battery but NOT the RC1 because it showed full power and I (apparently mistakenly) thought it meant it didn't need charging beforehand.

The RC1 was left uncharged for approximately a month or two.In the middle of my flight a few days ago, the RC1 suddenly glitched out, froze for a split second and then when it did come back it got into some kind of "fail-safe mode", status indicator light was purple and battery LEDs 2 & 3 were blinking on and off.I managed to "fix" the RC1 by long pressing the power button for 30 seconds and then the remote started working normally again, but ever since that incident whenever I take the RC1 more than 1-2 meters away from the drone, the connection begins to drop completely.

I tested this also outside the house in an open area. I tried refreshing the firmware for both the RC1 and the drone, I tried factory-resetting the RC1 settings, I tried draining the RC1 battery to zero and then recharging again, nothing worked.

I also have a video demonstrating this, but I can't upload it here apparently.

What are my options on how to fix this? I saw there are RC1 controllers on ebay for half the price of what they are on Amazon, but I want to know if there is a simpler fix before I spend that money on a new RC1.

you should
1. Re-install and/or update the firmware And\OR
2. FACTORY RESET the controller. And\OR
3.Calibrate the controller.
one of these will clear the problem. IF not Time to pick up a new one.

Thanks so much for your reply! :)
1. I did try and "downgrade then upgrade" my drone firmware, but this didn't help
1A. When I connected my remote-controller to my computer it didn't give me any options to downgrade the firmware, only 'refresh', which I did, several times, it didn't fix the issue.
2. I did that, by going into the RC android settings -> system settings -> factory reset. Didn't help.
3. What do you mean by 'calibrate the controller'? The only calibration I saw was a gimbal calibration, which I did, it didn't help.

My problem was spotty connection with the controller leading to camera lag. It’s due to the internal antenna in the controller. Poor design.

Yes, it is a poor design. If I fly my Mini 3 out 800 feet or so, it takes forever to respond to inputs from my RC's right control stick. The left stick continues to work, but that won't bring my drone back home. Btw, where did you get your antenna setup, and does it work well?
