I have two drones I’m considering selling, and I have no idea how to start. The first is a Mavic 2 Pro, the second is a Mavic Air 3. Both were “fly more” combo purchases, with three batteries and RC controllers. Both would include a backpack (Air 3) or a handbag (Pro 2).

Any help or recommend on the steps to accomplish a safe sale would be greatly appreciated.

I've sold several DJI drones via eBay and Google Marketplace. I've had no issues or problems. Just use common sense. The dedicated forum here is a good option, too. I bought a used RC controller I found listed on a state drone user forum. Again, no problems.

Be sure to unbind the drones from your DJI account prior to sale. I shot and kept videos and photos that documented that everything was in working order. For person-to-person sales, I also demonstrated the drone to the buyer during the sale. I wrote bills-of-sale with serial numbers and signed copies for both parties to document the details.

You can look at completed sales on eBay for an idea of what prices are appropriate. I like to price things slightly lower than the going rate and stipulate in the ad that the price is not negotiable. That helps discourage the folks who view window shopping and haggling as recreation and those who are likely to be a nuisance.

And if you are brave enough to sell your drones face to face then I would forgo any sort of electronic payment meaning probably cash only unless you super trust the person and then it would Paypal friends and family only. All the other methods including Venmo are too quirky to trust and have a history of being manipulated to the point where unless you are intimately familiar with, you run a risk. It's a lot of money so trust your senses.

For preparing your drones for sale:
  • Unbind the drone from your DJI account (more on that here).

  • If including a DJI remote controller with a screen, do a factory reset to clear out all of your data.

  • Remove or securely wipe any SD cards.

  • Wipe down the drone and all accessories, ensuring they are in good condition. Make a note of any issues.

  • Take detailed photos of everything included (well-lit, all angles, accessories laid out).

  • Take clear photos of all external serial numbers to include in your listing. This helps prevent disputes by ensuring the buyer receives the exact drone you're selling.

  • Look at recently completed sales on sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist to see what similar drones packages are selling for.

  • Create a detailed description for your listing, including things like the model name, any applicable serial numbers, what's included, a very detailed condition of drone and included accessories (including even minor imperfections like scratches or scuffs), the reason you're selling, and whether or not the price is negotiable.

If selling online and shipping to the customer:
  • Ensure everything is packed well so the drone and accessories arrive without damage.

  • Ensure the package is tracked and add insurance if you don't want to be responsible for any shipping mishaps. Send the tracking information to the buyer.

  • Selling in a well-known marketplace like eBay offers many protections against scams, but can cost around 10-15% in fees. It's a small price to pay for a no-hassle transaction.

  • If accepting a payment online, use a well-known payment platform like PayPal (don't accept a "friends and family" payment).
