Search and Rescue Drone

I have recently retired and I'd like to donate my time for a good cause. I've been flying for 5 years and recently got my 107. I've been considering volunteering for search and rescue support with several organizations and local law enforcement. I currently have an M2P but I'm considering investing in a M2E Dual (for nothing more than SAR - Not looking at surveys, inspections, etc). I've been doing research and the FLIR camera seems to get mixed reviews. Thoughts?

I too tried to get into the SAR but the good ole boy network is strong around here. I too have a mavic 2 pro but recently purchase a whoop drone with FPV googles. This tiny drone I believe would be perfect for inspecting damaged building before entering them. The drone are around $100 not including the controller and FPV googles. The controller and FPV can be used for multiple drones so if one gets lost or damaged in the rubble the loss is not as bad as loosing a MAVIC.

To your point, I have reached out to several public safety agencies in our area of North Florida to no avail. I am a Part 107 pilot with waivers. My only suggestion is to identify the agencies you want to work with. Stay engaged with them and if possible try to support them through non UAS activities. Let them get to know you and build trust.

Or just fly your drone and let the agency working know your findings. Local volunteer FD fighting a grassfire appreciated my ability to pinpoint origin and hotspots.
