Got an email this morning from Dji saying that orders placed today will ship by Jan 18th. Figured I'd give you guys a heads up.

Yes,I also got the email.So does this mean back orders will be quickly delivered or that buying direct will only guarantee a mavic.?

DJI has sent out an email that all back orders are caught up and shipping is 7-10 days from ordering. That is probably the most reliable shipping being documented now. You can definitely find them 'hit or miss' by closely following the threads here as certain places like Crutchfield are getting them in regularly. The bubble has broken. By the end of this month you will probably be able to walk into any place and just buy one. PS : it was worth the 9 week wait !
