Found the guide on the link below pretty useful for a recent boat trip I took on a local lake.

The article is written by a guy with a 50 metre (164 ft) boat.
It's possible to land and launch on something that size but on vessels that most of us might have access to, you will need to hand launch and hand catch.
There are plenty of forum threads here explaining the issues and ways to manage them.
