I’m heading off to the Philippines on vacation and want to take my Spark.
I’ve heard some horror stories from people about confiscations and fines.
Does anyone know if this actually happens?
They do have a DJI store in Manila selling Mavic’s and Spark’s .

DJI products are sold in many countries where their use is technically illegal -- ie Vietnam (where you can fly only after an arduous application process). Don't take the fact that they're sold there as an indication of legality. Laws are changing rapidly, so it's always best to check with the government there directly.

Just to update this thread for those who might check in later, the Philippines no longer requires permission to bring in or fly drones in the country. The flight restrictions are the same common sense ones you have pretty much everywhere. No flying within 10 km of the airport, above crowds... etc.
I contacted the CAAP yesterday by phone, and while they have no official document stating the law has changed, they assured me it has.

There is also this Youtube clip that reiterates that you NO LONGER need permission to fly in the Phils. *note.. check the update under the video.

I read about it and summed it out for us.. if for recreational use its pretty easy since the Civil Aviation Regulation Part 11.11 but if you intend to do any commercial activities with your footage, then it becomes a real pain..

Here are the main lines:
  • at a maximum altitude of 122 m above the ground.
  • at least 30 m from people or large crowds & respect individuals' privacy.
  • at least 10 km away from airports.
  • away from areas where its use could interfere with police or first responders.
  • fly within day light & within your sight at all times.
If your drone weights more than 7 kg, or for any other case going against the above code of conduct, you will need to comply with the commercial use rules explained below.

More available on the blog post! Have a great time there!
