In olden times, like a hundred years ago, pilots needed something easy to spot, like big white letters on the ground, to point them to the airport.

Believe it or not, there is a row of concrete arrows across the USA. These were painted yellow and lighted so airmail pilots 90 years ago could fly their routes at night.
