Many thanks to jagraphics for the prompt response regarding "UK - Filming in Public". I've spent the past week driving the wife mad looking everywhere for this letter that I'd previously read but couldn't think on what forum. Although somewhat dated, having made a few enquiries I'm reliably informed the contents remains valid, so for newbies like myself it's always handy to keep a copy for that "just in case" moment. ;)

Thank you for sharing these documents, the Police often need reminding that they have no power in prohibiting or preventing photography in public places.

Again, thank you - I'll be sure to save these for future use should I ever need to remind the local Police.

Thumbswayup

The only thing I don’t like about these two letters is the date, 2010. Both letters are nine years old, I wonder if there’s an updated letter or will these have been superseded.

As per OP:

But you know where I’m coming from, if I was to show that to a police officer who hasn’t got a clue, the first thing he will point out is the date and say is out of date, we both know what they’re like, that don’t like to be wrong when we try and defend our rights to flying

Yeah, I agree, I too would be interested in knowing if this is the most up to date clarification on photography law. But unless there is a more up to date document, this one is would have to be the current stance the law takes on the matter.

I will say though, I've seen Police quoting terrorism laws to get around these documents.

If I was to print these docs out, I'd be inclined to remove the date.

Re photography.. There is loads of stuff on the internet to explain the law to the police and loads of YouTube etc showing the police thinking they can make up the rules or interpret the laws as they feel fit.

I have some stuff regarding still photography, letters from ACPO, Home Office etc from my Press photography work, but all old now and things have changed. Though the Mark Thomas Stop and Search flyer is still worth it's weight in gold.

Later in the year when we have finished the fiasco that is Brexit I will chace up my contacts in HMG, CAA etc and see If I can put together a full set of documents for UK use. I have the SIMRO (solicitors) document on Photographers rights but again that was purely ground based stills photography. I will see if I can get them to do an updated version to cover video in 2019.

AFAIK the CAA Registration and rules from November 2019 are on piloting UAV's not photography or video?
