Ultimate Guide to Drone Insurance

Article by Johnathan Rupprecht, All rights are his and worth the read!

Do you know what the most numerous type of drone insurance claim is? Hint. It is not crashing a drone into a person, but you can find the answer in the Youtube video in the article.

Do you know that even if you are an additionally named insured on a policy, you could still face liability risk?

Did you know that negligent flight instruction (faced by educators, in-house drone programs, flight instructors, & course creators) is problematic, for reasons discussed in the article, but can be insured against?

This article is designed to help you understand drone insurance, drone insurance terminology, bad substitutes for proper drone liability insurance, and the different angles liability can come from so you can make wise decisions to protect your business and your family. This article is helpful for:

  • Commercial drone operators
  • Corporations with in-house operations
  • Businesses hiring drone operators for services
  • Recreational flyers

I have a General Liability Policy with Thimble with a 1 million Limit liability that covers damages I might do.

BWI won't insure hobbyists unless they have a Part 107 license. Drone Insurance is now a part of SkyWatch and it appears they require a Part 107 license as well and seem pricey. Verifly is a pay as you go, charging $10 per hour. Depending on the situation, that could be a bargain but I don't know the particulars, especially how you would provide proof of insurance is required.

Beware: in Quebec (probably all of Canada I would surmise), most personal liability insurance policies included in one's Home Insurance have a specific EXCLUSION for drones. Therefore, a separate and distinct insurance policy should (and must, especially in several EU jurisdictions) be secured to fly legally (at least 1M Eur).

I got mine through The Magnes Group and Coverdrone.
Geographical coverage is as follows:
Worldwide
Excluding: North Korea, Iran, Russia, Crimea, Ukraine and Belarus Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria,
Yemen, Nagorno-Karabakh, North Caucasian Federal District, Somalia, The Republic of Sudan,
South Sudan Burundi, Cabinda, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo,
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mauritania, Gorgia, Pakistan Any country where the
operation of the insured Aircraft is in breach of the United Nations resolutions or the trade or
economic sanctions, laws or regulations of the European Union, United Kingdom or United
States of America.

To purchase the policy, being in Canada,I also had to become a member of COPA.

Cost (all in CAD$):
$137 for the insurance policy itself (underwritten by Lloyd's of London).
$97 for 1yr membership with COPA
$30 for The Magnes Group insurance broker fees
Total: $264

They had it listed under just "photgraphy" however, I am dropping them due to doubling their prices.

I get $2,000 of drone insurance (similar to auto comprehensive) thru State Farm for $75/yr, which covers recreational flying only. For this reason, I let my Part 107 license lapse. I have liability coverage thru my USAA homeowners package. It's covers only $750,000 in damages--not enough for flying in parts of the EU, where 1,000,000 Euro is required.

Why did you need to let your part 107 license lapse in connection with State Farm insurance which covers recreational flying only, I don't understand the thinking?
