What am I doing wrong?

This is an issue even with pro photographers, several items of concern is movement, depth of field, minimum focal distance. I am not familiar with your aircraft but if you can, pull back a little, focus on the face as best as possible then crop in your post processing with your software. In the field when using even a standard camera, try not to do a tight crop, give some space and check your focus point. Hope this helps, let us know how it worked out.

It was an issue with me being an idiot and having the camera on manual focus
