What would you say happened to this flight?

It's pretty simple.
You launched and flew northeast along the coast with a very strong tailwind.
Just after a minute into the flight, you left the drone hovering and it was unable to hold position.
The wind was pushing it NE at 5-8 mph.
That's nature's way of telling you that you won't be able to fly back to the launch point.
If you weren't sure whether the drone could manage against the wind, you should have tried flying into the wind right from the start.

At two minutes you were trying to fly into the wind at full stick and being blown backwards at up to 10 mph.
The drone was blown further up the beach and you looked for somewhere to land and put it down 2200 ft from the launch point.

Wind strength during the flight was 50-57 mph.

Oh myyyyy goodness!! I can't imagine...anyone flying in such conditions...scary!!
You are just a vessel traveling in air. It doesn’t have to be turbulent. It’s just moving to fast to counter.

High wind warning at that altitude ?
Not sure what you are saying here.
There was a high wind at all altitudes for the flight.
It would have been obvious to the flyer before he launched.
Evidence of signal interference to controller.
No matter where in the flight there may have been interference, it had nothing to do with the flight.

But that message only showed after the drone had landed on the beach >2000 feet away.
It's completely normal and to be expected.

I sure did and before I made it home from vacation DJI had sent the replacement to my house.
Why did you need a replacement?

Why did you start this thread asking what might have happened and not come back with any explanation?
Was the outcome of the flight a mystery to you or something else?

I was able to get it down in the sand but the storm had approached much quicker than anticipated and in the few mins it took me to get to it, it was practically covered in sand/water. I have vacationed in this area many times over the past 7-8 years and have never seen a storm do what this storm did. I normally launch (and land) well before the storm is remotely close for cloud/lightning shots (I'm talking storms that are miles away). I would have never launched had I known what I know now and will certainly be more diligent in the future.

I wasn't sure if something mechanically had gone wrong literally because I didn't see those winds (visually or on radar) until it was too late. Here is a shot (this was either 3x or 7x) last year.

I would say you flew it into a storm.

Upload the .txt flight log to
replay the flight, watch the 'artificial horizon' and compare the tilts shown with the joystick commands/positions.

From 8sec to 41sec, it is showing appreciable roll, 19deg, for very little to no aileron input.

Even if you weren't screen watching and were watching the drone it would have been evident that the drone was leaning whilst you were not giving side stick.

From 57sec to 61sec the drone is pointing into the wind and commanded to fly backwards at more or less full speed yet the artificial horizon shows the drone to be, more or less, in the hover position etc. etc. etc.
I.e. for virtually the whole flight the artificial horizon in the app, if displayed, would have been telling you the drone was encountering significant wind. And, if you were looking at the drone during the first 20 sec, you would have seen tilt that you did not commanded.
