As far as I can make out these wild elephants are protected in a local, large, national park. However, in search of more diverse food they wander out into residential areas where they are scared away by local farmers for eating their crops and more importantly because they are terrified of them. Story has it last year a woman rubber farmer was visited by a curious baby elephant and the mother killed the woman. The year before two monks on their way to collect food from the locals came across an elephant who turned on them, killed one and hospitalised the other. As you can see from the clip the locals are indeed terrified of them. The loud gunshot sounds are fireworks used to scare them away. Guns have been banned in the area. Although Thailand has extensive and large national parks, they are not enough for heards of wild elephants. The same the world over. And there are solutions.
If you want to cut the babble, just go to the end of the video to see the heard.
